Six Galveston Wonders!

This past week, we decided to go on "vacation." Every day this week we planned something fun to do right here in our town of Galveston that would be fun, free, and somewhat time consuming. During our tourist days, we learned that Galveston actually has A LOT of history in the Civil War, Texas/Mexican wars, and even some Revolutionary history!  Here is our week of Galveston wonders...

 Day 1: Kempner Park

This building used to be a German club, it was
donated to the city of Galveston

Just sittin' on a bench by a fountain that didn't work.

This little black girl came up to me and gave me this
 "bracelet," I obviously loved it.

Looks like Sean could use a bit more fiber in his diet...

Day 2: The Strand

First commercial market in Galveston, used as
a look out during the Civil War, and part of one
of the columns is missing due to a cannon-
ball.

View of the Strand

When In Texas..

Sean thinks he's balding...he wanted this hat :)

Not really sure what the purpose of this is...but it's cool, right?

Thomas Jefferson Building

There are churches like this all over Galveston! Due to damage from Hurricane Ike, this is now used as a place to feed and house the homeless.

Another church down the road, it's abandoned.

Day 3: Moody Gardens

Outdoor butterfly gardens..and there was actually a lot of butterflies!

The old steamboat that Sean wanted to ride :)

The running track around Moody Gardens
Moody Gardens has a dinosaur park (it costs moola though)

Sean being sneaky going up the hidden staircase

Fact: Sean used to LOVE bamboo as a kid (I think
he still does...)

These little guys are EVERYWHERE!

Day 4: Rosenberg Library-oldest continued use library in Texas

One of the first globes to show the Republic
 of Texas
Some bell with historical significance, I forgot what it was though :)

LOTS of old books...these all happen to be about countries around the world

We got our very own library cards and checked out the books  Holes, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Huck Finn. We also got an old Cary Grant Movie.

We watched the movie that night :)

Day 5: Galveston Visitors Center

Sean thought the side walk was a road and we ended up in a very awkward position...

"Wanna buy a sundial?"

Unfortunately this thing is over 100 years old,
a Tamale would have been a nice treat :)
We got a few brochures

Day 6: Tree Carving Tour-After hurricane Ike most of the trees were destroyed, many people chose to have their dead trees carved.  Here are just a FEW of them.

One of the original directors of the "Wizard of Oz" lived in this house

Not a tree...but definitely interesting.

One of our favorites, it's a grandmother reading to her grandchildren with characters  from books on the top

Did I mention we walked to all of these...in Texas...during the summer. Wow, it was toasty!

One of Sean's favorites...half the tree is still living
This is exactly what I want in my front yard...

My favorite! It's called the "Lion King"
