The Healer's Art: Moms and Nurses-One Job to the Next

As my primary job title is quickly (like within weeks/days people) going to switch from “Nurse” to “Mom” I have been thinking a lot about the two jobs and responsibilities that go with them.  To make an extremely long story short, I chose to become a nurse so that I could help kids and young adults live better lives. Little did I know that the path to receiving my bachelors in nursing and working as a nurse would be one of the most difficult challenges placed in my path, but would also prove to have some of the most rewarding and unforgettable experiences.
For those who may read this and not know, I am a registered nurse in the operating room at Shriners Burns Hospital for Children in Galveston.  The reaction that I generally get when people find out that I work with pediatric burned victims is bewilderment at the fact that I don’t come home crying every day. It is true, there are some things that I dislike about my job. For instance, the chaos that occurs every morning as the surgery schedule is being decided, dealing with surgical consents (and surgeons-haha), charting, when patients stop breathing or blood pressures drop (which causes me to nearly hyperventilate and my blood pressure to go through the roof), the stories behind many of our patients, being thrown into uncomfortable situations, and finally, the anesthetic effects on patients…aka, nausea. When they throw up, I wanna throw up, and so on. But, for the negative parts of my job that day after day can be exhausting, there are positives that few people in this world are blessed to witness, and that’s why I don’t come home crying all the time. I see miracles every day. Some days are hard, and you have to look a little harder to see the miracle, but it’s there. When you see kids walking down the hallway for the first time since their accident, or when patients switch from becoming “acute” to having only reconstructive work done,  when I understand just enough Spanish to get the patient what they need, when I suddenly know where to find the unpronounceable instrument that the surgeon absolutely needs that very second, and when a group of healthcare professionals, nurses, scrub techs, surgeons, anesthesia, residents, physicians assistants, respiratory therapists, fellows, and students come together, putting differences aside,  to help save a life.
It may sound crazy, but working as a nurse really parallels the job of motherhood (from what I can see so far…I haven’t been a mom yet.)
To make an extremely long story short, I chose to become a mother so that I could create an eternal family, raise children in the Gospel, teach them how to make choices that lead to better lives. Little did I know that when Sean and I decided a family, it would begin a journey of unforeseen challenges, but also be accompanied by some of the most rewarding and unforgettable experiences (and our little guy isn’t even born yet!)
For those who may read this and not know, I am currently 36 weeks pregnant with our first child, a son, who is due in May. When many people find out that we have been married just under a year (best year of my life thus far I must add), are in our first year of medical school, and now I’m pregnant, they think we are just a little crazy. And it’s true. I have not lived through motherhood yet, and I am sure I am clueless to what this job fully entails, but I have observed and heard about the chaos that occurs every morning, afternoon, and night as getting kids dressed, attempting to make dinner, brushing teeth, changing diapers, cleaning spills, doing laundry, crying babies, etc., having disagreements on how things should be done, when bedtime should really be, and how much candy they can eat that day. As a mom you have to keep track of several different schedules and try and please everyone, you are thrown in scary and uncomfortable situations that sometimes take your breath away. Moms learn to deal with lots of poop, and throw up, and tears, and stains, and spills, and blow-outs, and whatever else comes into a little kids mind.  But, there is opposition in all things; meaning that the more joy you receive from something, often times is accompanied by how difficult and frustrating it may be.  So just as I am sure that I do not understand the trials that motherhood are about to bring, or the tears I may shed after too many sleepless nights, I also believe that as a mother I can witness miracles every day that many choose to never see. Some days will be hard, and I may have to look for the miracles, but they will be there.  For example, my own child learning to hold his head up, or taking his first steps, knowing what my baby needs even when I don’t speak his language, for the first time understanding the love a mother can have for her children (and by doing so, gaining a better understanding of the love my Savior and Heavenly Father has for me), and the miracle of sacrifice, as Sean and I no longer will own our time nor our sleep, but we will learn the blessings that come from giving of yourself.
I am so excited to take BYU’s nursing motto, “Learning the Healers Art,” out of my nursing career and apply it to my new career! I truly believe that parenthood is the closest we will get on this earth to reaching our potential to become like our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. I am so excited to carry the title of “Mom” and can’t wait to meet this boy!  I am SO grateful to my own mom for loving me when it wasn’t easy, for my mother-in-law for raising a son more patient, more diligent, and more loving than any person I have ever met, and for all the mother figures I have had in my life!

Just a short clip for all the moms out there:

The Texan Great Outdoors

Last weekend, to celebrate the end of one of the first year medical students' classes, we and 3 others families decided to take a trip into the wilderness. We went to Brazos Bend State Park and spent the night. Amidst being attacked by raccoons, Sean getting eaten alive by ants (which he still has the bites to prove), and struggling with getting our fire started, we had a GREAT time! We saw a lot of interesting wildlife on this trip! For instance...raccoons, wild pigs which nearly became part of the Doxeys' front bumper, alligators, all sorts of birds, turtles, deer, an armadillo (which was alive and not squished on the side of the road), and fire flies...which I saw for the first time in my life! Thanks to Sean's brother, Kendall, for letting us borrow all his camping supplies :)

Sean attempting to chop wood with the hatchet we forgot we had brought...

Home Sweet Home! Pregnant ladies home (that's me) on the left equipped with an air mattress, plus two additional layers of padding...and several pillows. VanWagenen's on the right :)

Jocelyn, the planner of this marvelous event, and her boy Bennett

Megan and Troy, who ate as much as Megan. haha

Some of the wildlife...

We had to go buy a lighter...I guess our fire issues are a punishment for Sean not doing Boy Scouts.

Sean's successful use of the pie iron. Not the best looking omelet, but it was delicious!

We spent a lot of time fanning the fire....

Sara took a shot at the pie iron
"Early" morning frisbee

I told Sean to buy a small broom to sweep the tent out with. He came back with this Barbie sized one :)

The whole crew :)

I'm not sure if these were more creepy during the day when we could see their whole body, or during the night visit to the lake when all you could see was their beady little eyes swimming towards you.

I hated to take a picture of poor Troy in his misery, but I couldn't help it.

A face only a mother could love

According to Google, this would be a Red Shouldered Hawk

We truly are blessed to live in such a wonderful world and have such great friends to share it with! Even though this wasn't quite like the camping I grew up with (no mountains, alligators instead of bears, and flushable toilets-which were a nice change) it brought back lots of memories and we hope to do it again soon!

Meet Baby Boy Stout

We can't start out 2014, the year in which our son will be born, without introducing him! He has already brought so much happiness to our little family, life would not be the same without him! I already feel like such a mom...aka I worry about him all the time! Since this is my first pregnancy, everything is new to both Sean and I, and every weird cramp, contraction, or anything makes me panic. You may think that the fact that I am in the health care profession would lead me to be calm and not worry so much. Just the opposite my friends. In my career as a nurse I have seen way too many "normal" symptoms lead to disaster that I am probably overly cautious, something our baby boy will not be grateful for in the future I am sure. My job does pose some risks, which also make me worry. Anyone who has ever been pregnant or lived with someone who is pregnant, I'm sure understands all the woes of pregnancy, so I'm not going to focus on that. We are SO EXCITED to be parents!!!!! We love our son like crazy and can't wait for him to arrive! With that said...

Getting to Know Our Son:

Most definitely a BOY! We are beyond excited for our first to be a boy! I was so excited when they told us I could barely sit still!

His cute toes

All 10 fingers

I think he looks just like his dad...a bit thin on the hair :) haha

Baby's Hobbies: at 23 weeks old, Baby Boy Stout enjoys punching mom's intestines, throwing parties on her bladder, and giving her hello kicks throughout day. He likes kicking dads hands and moving more when dad talks to him or plays guitar. He most definitely is a night owl!

Baby's Facts: His little heart beats around 140-150 beats a minute. He is about 1 foot long and at 18 weeks he weighed 10oz, so he is probably around a pound by now (23 weeks)

Baby Names: Our list of names we like is quickly dwindling. Of course in the next few months everything could change, but right now our number 1 name is Corbin. In fact, we already call him baby Corbin all the time. But who knows?

Mom and Dad:

This was around 18 weeks

The rocking chair I got from Sean for Christmas :)

We had a bet. Sean was positive we were having a girl, and I thought we were having a boy. The winner had to take the other person out to a restaurant of their choice. We both chose Texas Road House, so it was really a win win situation. Of course I was right though...

My feet swell. They usually swell after work, and make it very painful to stand, but for some reason they decided to swell on our car ride to the temple one day...
Sean does take pity on me...

I came home to a beautiful rose the day we found out we were having a boy :) Sean is going to be a WONDERFUL dad!

around 20 weeks...

Sympathy weight?

We have decided on a Zoo theme for his room :)

Tis' The Seasons

Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!!  Since I'm lazy, I will describe our holiday adventures via photo.

THANKSGIVING: I was able to get Thursday and Friday off of work for Thanksgiving, so Sean and I went to Fort Worth and enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with the Stout side of the family! We have SO many things to be grateful for this year. To name just a few: we graduated from BYU, the establishment of the Sean and Carlee Stout family (aka- we got married), Sean's unbelievable scholarship, my job (although I may beg to differ, it has been an extreme blessing), our home, the Gospel, the love and support we receive daily from our family and friends, Sean's medical education, and finally...our son, whom we have not yet met in person but brings more joy and laughter to our lives than we could have imagined!

I made my Mom's homemade, delicious, not nutritious, Thanksgiving roll recipe for our work party. I must say, I am a natural.

A little croquet in Sean's back yard

DELICIOUS Thanksgiving meal!

Risking his life to get some real life, freshly grown mistletoe. What a man.

I went through my first "real" car wash. It was very exciting!

CHRISTMAS: It truly is the most wonderful time of the year! Because I only had Christmas Eve and Christmas day off work, we decided to spend our first Christmas as just the two of us in the place we now call home, Galveston. I believe it was a Christmas to remember, and we will never have one quite like it again. I am SO grateful to have Sean in my life, and having him as my husband this year (and every year to come) is the best present I could have ever received! We had a blast together, starting new traditions, keeping old ones, and celebrating the first of many Santa Claus visits to our home!

Santa came into Galveston in style...

Our new stockings :)

Behold! The glorious tree!

And we made a tree at work...

Dickens on the Strand!

Victorian bed racing down the Strand. The actual races were on Sunday, so we missed those, but we did get to see some of the beds.

Chestnuts (which were actually almonds) roasting on an open fire.

Galveston doesn't get snow too often...so they have to make it :) It was a little icy, but snow nonetheless.

Alpaca. Why not?

Our beautiful ginger bread houses, courtesy of our friends, Alexis and Michael Payne.

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS! If you know me at all, you know I love lights. We caught the last boat ride on The Colonel for the night and got to see all of Moody Gardens decorated from a distance.

Aboard The Colonel.

We went to the beach on Christmas day

And had a little family photo shoot with the camera Sean got me :)

We went to one of my favorite places in Galveston on Christmas Eve, Kempner Park.

The fountain was turned on! It was a Christmas miracle!

Sean's victory dance after climbing this tree...

Just a walk around the park

Discovery museum

Christmas Eve dinner...may have been the best steak I have ever had!

NEW YEAR 2014: 2013 was filled with lots of good change, wonderful excitement, and many adventures. We plan to make 2014 just as great and exciting! Although I slept most of the night, I had a blast while I was awake and we are SO grateful that Sean's mom and dad and Kendall and Halie were able to come celebrate with us!
Sean's family decorates the Christmas tree with balloons and streamers to bring in the New Year. I love the tradition and plan to keep it alive in our family!

First New Year's kiss as husband and wife. Awwww
Dance Party at midnight!

No way to bring in the new year like some Mario Party on the N64.
It got a little crazy...
