The Texan Great Outdoors

Last weekend, to celebrate the end of one of the first year medical students' classes, we and 3 others families decided to take a trip into the wilderness. We went to Brazos Bend State Park and spent the night. Amidst being attacked by raccoons, Sean getting eaten alive by ants (which he still has the bites to prove), and struggling with getting our fire started, we had a GREAT time! We saw a lot of interesting wildlife on this trip! For instance...raccoons, wild pigs which nearly became part of the Doxeys' front bumper, alligators, all sorts of birds, turtles, deer, an armadillo (which was alive and not squished on the side of the road), and fire flies...which I saw for the first time in my life! Thanks to Sean's brother, Kendall, for letting us borrow all his camping supplies :)

Sean attempting to chop wood with the hatchet we forgot we had brought...

Home Sweet Home! Pregnant ladies home (that's me) on the left equipped with an air mattress, plus two additional layers of padding...and several pillows. VanWagenen's on the right :)

Jocelyn, the planner of this marvelous event, and her boy Bennett

Megan and Troy, who ate as much as Megan. haha

Some of the wildlife...

We had to go buy a lighter...I guess our fire issues are a punishment for Sean not doing Boy Scouts.

Sean's successful use of the pie iron. Not the best looking omelet, but it was delicious!

We spent a lot of time fanning the fire....

Sara took a shot at the pie iron
"Early" morning frisbee

I told Sean to buy a small broom to sweep the tent out with. He came back with this Barbie sized one :)

The whole crew :)

I'm not sure if these were more creepy during the day when we could see their whole body, or during the night visit to the lake when all you could see was their beady little eyes swimming towards you.

I hated to take a picture of poor Troy in his misery, but I couldn't help it.

A face only a mother could love

According to Google, this would be a Red Shouldered Hawk

We truly are blessed to live in such a wonderful world and have such great friends to share it with! Even though this wasn't quite like the camping I grew up with (no mountains, alligators instead of bears, and flushable toilets-which were a nice change) it brought back lots of memories and we hope to do it again soon!
